The Physics of Atmosphere
A good atmosphere isn't just about intent; it's about physics. When 5,000 fans sing in an open bowl stadium, the sound energy dissipates into the sky. In a steep, tightly enclosed stand with a low, reflective roof, that same energy is trapped and directed downward onto the pitch.
RT60: The Decay Time
Acousticians use RT60—the time it takes for a sound to decay by 60 decibels. If RT60 is too low (under 1.2 seconds), the stadium feels "dead". Chants stop instantly when the crowd stops. If RT60 is too high (over 3 seconds), chants overlap and turn into a muddy roar, making complex multi-verse songs impossible to sustain.
The Sweet Spot: A reverberation time of 1.8 to 2.2 seconds allows the "wall of sound" effect, where syllables overlap just enough to create continuous noise without losing rhythmic clarity.
Architectural Killers of Sound
- The Bowl Design: Curves lack the hard corners required for sound to bounce back.
- High Roofs: The greater the volume of air trapped under the roof, the weaker the sound pressure level (SPL) at ground level.
- Padded Seats & Carpets: Soft materials absorb high-frequency sound (clapping, sharp vocals). Bare concrete and steel reflect it.
