Broadcasting & Fixture Disruption

How television scheduling treats traveling fans as collateral damage.

The Six-Week Notice Failure

Leagues establish guidelines requiring broadcasters to select televised fixtures (and thus alter kickoff times) six weeks in advance. These deadlines are routinely missed. When a Saturday 3pm fixture is moved to Monday 8pm with only three weeks' notice, the financial burden falls entirely on the traveling supporter.

The Sunk Costs

  • Advance Rail Fares: Non-refundable train tickets purchased 12 weeks out to secure viable pricing.
  • Annual Leave: PTO booked for weekends that must now be shifted to weekdays, often denied by employers.
  • Hotels: Non-refundable accommodation for long-distance trips.
The Structural Issue: Broadcasters optimize for global viewership metrics in timezones like Asia and North America. The 3,000 away fans in the stadium are viewed purely as unpaid extras for the broadcast, despite bearing the logistical costs.
